Barbara Ewing
Barbara Ewing started her working life in the drawing office of a Structural Engineering Consultancy.
Family life dictated a change and she moved on to become a ceramicist, trained by Frauke Viewing a well-known Zimbabwean ceramicist.
Porcelain being her favourite medium, she was consumed and fascinated by the process of developing her own glazes with the help of her Metallurgical Chemist husband Danny
Later, quite by accident she fell into the world of Furniture Design, a career she still follows periodically. Working for a young forward thinking furniture manufacturer, The Very Different Furniture Co. for over 10 years. In 2001 she joined her son Angus in his Design and Manufacturing Companies, African Moon, New Moon Africa and SoZa Gallery.
Having always been interested in the world of glass, seemingly a natural progression from potter to glass artist, her passion and obsession has become glass in many forms. Firstly in Kiln-formed and flame worked glass and now cast glass sculpture has become her life. Well-known South African Glass Artist, Nelius Britz has become her mentor. His art glass gallery, the EDGE glass Gallery (www.capeglassstudio.com ), represents Barbara since 2006 and at the beginning of 2012 she started working at Nelius’s Cape Glass Studio and having mastered the difficult techniques of kiln-casting, she creates complex and unique sculptures
A perfectionist by nature, Barbara Ewing’s designs illustrate her appreciation of the simplicity of line and form. Inspired by all things African and organic she believes we should embrace and celebrate our Africanisim.
